On a bizarre name change...
The General... Well, the name change was unwarranted and also produces some odd mental images.

Hakuro refers to a time of year, the point in september when it's still hot but getting cooler and birds start to migrate.

Haruko is 1. a girl's name, and 2. means "spring child". O_o Ummkay, Funimation.

Yes... that is an odd one. o_O I actually went over to Mike McFarland's journal and posted a comment asking about it. ^_^;;

What is Mike McFarland's journal? I know of Travis', but that's all.

>_> He posted at least once in this community, you can get it by digging. That's how I found it, at least. ^_^;; (hint: try looking at entries around the times when the episodes started airing on Adult Swim)

Interestingly enough, I had interpreted that man's name to be "Halcrow."
darkazriel on December 5th, 2004 01:55 am (UTC)
It's quite possible. After all, nobody else in series had a japanese name (except Izumi).

Either way, Hakuro or Halcrow, making it Haruko still makes no sense... :/ Bad Funi. No cookie.

I know that in the manga scanslation I have they translated it as "Halcrow" though AF-F/Spoon and Sonchou did it as Hakuro.

Personally, I call him Hakuro, but in the manga-chapters Toriyama World released, he was called Halcrow.

That was a case of bad romanization. The katakana for Halcrow would've been HARUKUROU. But it's HAKURO. So, yeah.

Halcrow would have been a good choice... but Haruko? o_O;;;;

*FALLS OVER AND DIES*

I think it's kinda my fault since I started it all. BAH. Damn you, Cowboy Bebop fandom and your wars for inspiration. XD

Anyways, I'm snagging that photoedit for the War. I'm hoping to update it this week if I can sort through everything. Jimminy Cricket. x_x

You noticed it too? I was completely irked when I heard "Haruko" o_O; I kept whining about it the whole episode. > >;

Okay, here's the answer Mike McFarland gave when I asked him about it in his journal-

"Well, the spelling and pronunciation came up in question, because it was written both ways in the materials we received from Japan. When we asked the Japanese about it, they said "Go with Haruko", and so we did. Believe it or not, almost anything in question about this show is decided that way: by asking the source. We really do care, and want to do right by the show..."

So there you have it, blame the Japanese company. :p
