Ok I have a question

What the bloody hell is Envy? I don't know if it is a boy or girl. I always thought it impersonated too many people to remember its gender or true form, but the long hair form it uses. Is it male or female? It sounds male but it looks female. I can't rely on the voice since Al and Ed are both played by women. Does anyone know?

This comes after me seeing a Lust/Envy DJ and they were she males.

Can I just say how much much I love Armstrong!!!!!! He has always been my fav FMA character.

I imagine the form that Envy maintains most of the time is androgynous, that is, very very GENDERLESS. However, in the anime, his TRUE form (that is, who he was before he died, since in the anime, the homunculi are all born from failed human transmutations. The manga is different, as I'm sure you know) is most definitely male.

I theorize the one he uses most of the time really is genderless though, as the androgynous being is an important symbol in alchemy, and it seemed to fit with the series. The manga suggests that he's somehow incomplete (Greed mentions it)

That's all I know or theorize XD

But through the manga he doesn't remember his true form. That's why I asked. Also I'm up to chapter 37 in the manga

He doesn't in the manga, but he DOES in the anime, that's what we've been trying to tell you XD In the anime, he's a big fat hairy liar, and saves the fact that he actually DOES know what his true form is for a very crucial and strategic moment ^.^

but you can hold the anime as AU to the manga

Envy is just going to have to be non-gender to me until the manga says what it is.

I AGREE that he's androgynous! XD I'm not arguing that he isn't *laughs*

LMAO can you imagine Envy as a girl... What would happen is the manga took that turn.

androgynous=non-gender. ^^;

Actually, Arakawa Hiromu (author and creator of the series) said that Envy does not know if he's a girl or a guy. Also in the manga, the method of creating Homunculus is different and the whole "Homunculus are born from failed Human Transmutations" thing only pertains to the anime and not the since in the manga its completely different.

yes but i still though Envy would have a gender.

He wouldn't have a clearly defined gender like how to tell if one is a girl, she has wide hips and a bust or if they're a guy, tall, deep voice and wide broad shoulders. Envy is in between but most refer to Envy as 'he did' rather than 'she' since as people we commonly choose to refer to someone who's gender we know not of when we first see them as a 'he'. (Say for example you see a girl but with boyish looks. People will tend to say maybe 'How's he doing?' instead of 'How's she' because to them since they don't know for sure they will choose to refer to the person as a guy until they find out otherwise.)

I'm still confused. I still think of Envy as an 'It'.
Marikaitou_marina on November 29th, 2004 11:10 pm (UTC)
And we're agreeing with you *nods* I just choose to call Envy "he" because "it" sounds awkward when roleplaying or writing fanfiction.

ahh makes sense. I call Envy it cause yeah... I dunno!! lol

Its just the english language. Saying "It did this and that" makes no real sense so you have to attach a gender pronoun like "he" or "she". Some languages follow this same thing like spanish, french or italian just to name a few. Japanese is different since some words aren't affected by thier pronoun and there are very very few gender-specific words.

(like in french il est allé and elle est allée are different because the verbs aller (to go) are affected by thier gendered pronouns which are il (he) and elle (she). Yes, that was a crash course in french grammar for you)

Ok so we all agree Envy is genderless.

I'm still sure the Dub will make Envy a man.
ACacdragonmaster on November 29th, 2004 11:22 pm (UTC)
They will, because the Japanese makes him sound like a man. Not in the pitch of his voice, but in the vocabularly he uses. I explained this in more detail in another comment, but basically Envy regularly uses some words that *only* males use in Japanese...
