[BAS]
Hey, everyone, remember me? Well, I'm the same, except for one thing.

I'm the new mod 'round these parts. :D But I'm not posting to gloat.

From this post on, all posts subjects should include in the subject "BA", if you were a member before tonight, or have watched the fansubs.

If you've joint tonight, or past this pont, please include a "AS" in your subject line. This is a way to see if people read this post, and after it dissapears, the rules. I ask if a new member does not include "BA" or something spoilerish with "BA", please refer them to here or the many things I wrote up about this issue, and ask them to include it from this point on. If they respond harshly, please refer them to me. Thanks. :D

[If it's a non-spoil post, news, or art or such, include "BAS"]

I don't want there to be more wank then there should be, everyone should have a right to this fandom, whether BA or AS.

EDIT: If you are unsure of the "BA" or "AS", here's an excerpt from our new FAQ.

12. What do “BA” and “AS”stand for? I keep seeing them in posts!

Please refer to the communities’ “Open Letter” for more information. “BA” stands for “Before America”, referring to fans who have seen the series before it aired on Cartoon Network, and have seen the series. “AS” (American Screening/Adult Swim) fans are those who view Fullmetal Alchemist via Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim”. “BAS” is a post that does not include any spoilers to both sides. This is to everyone’s convenience not for people to be spoiled.

Sorry, I'm trying to follow, but my shallow brain cannot compute what you've just said about putting "BA" in the subject and so on. xD;

(okay, maybe I'm just tired. ;_;)

Why don't we just cut all the segway and just call it "BS"?

Why don't we leave it at "SPOILER CUT ALL MATERIAL BEYOND THE BASE PLOT"? That way members will have less cluttered, long, rambling posts on their lists and even the newbs will be spared the spoilers? It's not that hard to stick a warning on it. And hey, whoever clicks, well it's their fault isn't it?

I just don't see why everything needs to be coded. It's complicated, the majority of people won't follow it anyway, and in general it's just sort of needless.

Just saying, is all.
She and her Catwednesday_tea on November 6th, 2004 11:00 pm (UTC)
I gotta agree. We're already pretty careful about spoiler-cutting stuff. I saw a "SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 2" cut tag a while back.

I think wank will find its way anyway.

People will make half awake posts. They'll forget about the coding. Insert "OMG you forgot to put BA or AS!!!11!" wank.

There are some people who won't read the rules before joining, and start posting stuff without coding. See previous.

Someone will start off with the intention of making it spoiler free, but someone will ruin it. We saw that happen with the last few episodes.

The coding is a completely forgein system, and I think will cause more harm than good. And does it apply to EVERYTHING? Does that mean the art and fic posts have to have that coding on it, even if the posts say "SPOILERS FOR ## EPISODE/CHAPTER"?
billypilgrim on November 6th, 2004 11:03 pm (UTC)
Where do people find this coding problem?

It's very simple. Old fans discussing spoilers = BA.
New fans discussing the show as they go along = AS.
Something that's just news = BAS.

It's not Algebra, people.

bah why make it so perplexing dub people can read as easily as people who have seen the original it does not take many lines of a post for someone to deside weather or not they want to know what happens the spoilers tages have worked fine before with the regular lj cuts this just seems a bit accessive
billypilgrim on November 6th, 2004 11:25 pm (UTC)
Lines of posts? How are TWO LETTER lines of posts? Are you even realizing it's putting two letters in a subject?

I have to throw my voice on the side of those who think this is going to confuse people even more.

I think it would be simplest for people to simply cut and mark spoilers by episode number. It's worked fine before, and if people don't know how to LJ-cut, just put a link to the FAQ section that explains it in the rules. If they still don't do it, it's their own fault, and they're probably the kind of person who wouldn't pay attention to all this BA/AS stuff anyway.

Coding things this way will confuse some people, and it really increases the risk of elitism wank, because it's putting people in camps--old fan, new fan--before discussion even starts. I'd like to think that people are mature enough not to get snooty and elitist over these kinds of things, but...it's the internet. Give people any excuse to wank, they will happily take it. And we're all here for the same reason--we love FMA. Shouldn't we all be on equal footing as fans, instead of being separated by when we saw it before we even get to posting?

I understand how the code is supposed to work just fine. But I still think it's going to cause more problems than it solves.
billypilgrim on November 6th, 2004 11:35 pm (UTC)
First of all, thank you for expressing your opinion in a repsectable manner. It's not like the code is [new fan + wank - lj-cut = a, b, or c]. xD;

I'd just to like to use this as an example:

New Fan: "Hey, who thinks that Envy might be related to Ed in some way? Is there a connection?"

New Fans: *discuss*

Old fan: [Taking the question as literal] *answer*

New fans: THANKS FOR SPOILERING *wank*

Everyone: *wank*

It is ridiculous how people are doing that >_<. It's not being put in place for us to be elitist to the new fans - I would leave this comm right *now* if I thought that (I've been a victim of it).
It's merely so when fans who have seen the entire series are discussing something that is spoilerish to people who haven't, we can label the post clearly so they know. Being spoilered is not a great deal of fun if you don't want to be.

I have a question.
I've been with the manga since the first scanlations were up, but I never got to watch the subed anime because .AVI and other motion picture files do a number on my computer.

So does that lump in in with the AS fans, the BA fans or something else?
The Sleeping Dragondormantdrake on November 7th, 2004 06:03 am (UTC)
Well, I think that the main point is to new fans coming here from Adult Swim from accidently being spoilered, so I would use BA. BA seems like it's going to mean, "huge spoilers in *here*!"
Thank you. - aristide on November 7th, 2004 07:23 am (UTC) (Expand)

...I'm sorry, I just really think we should stick with the "Warning! Spoilers for (insert episode number here)!" Even if it's not meant to be elitist, it just feels that way. :\ A BA and AS system might be meant to prevent spoilers for the new fans, but something like that will soon become a label. Instead of using it in the headers, people will start talking about how they are "BA fans" or "AS fans".

>_< Maybe I'm worrying too much, but I just feel that this is going to lead to some bad months for everyone when this happens.
