D00d~! Lightbulb Ed
First off, I have a question for everything:

Assuming the FMA manga gets licensed, and we all know it will be, who would you want to publish it?

Del Rey is my top choice. If Del Rey gets it, I will run around happily.
Tokyopop is okay. They have quite a few things that I dislike about them, but they're my second choice.
If Viz gets it, I will mutter darkly, but I'll still buy it.
If it's CPM I will cry, curse and refuse to buy it. Sorry to any CPM fans.

Now, to give you a gift. From the person who actually made an Envy!bulb, I bring you another one.

If not Tokyo-Pop I think Darkhorse would be a good choice.
Envyactyoursoxoff on October 31st, 2004 04:54 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Darkhorse is pretty okay. I don't have too much of an opinion on them, so usually when I'm comparing Manga publishers, I don't mention them. And a few others...

And this is me, just under my RP journal which I don't feel like logging out of...

In english?...

Perhaps Viz or Tokyopop...mind, the con with those two is that they're horribly expensive in Canada with thier manga. If not outragously. Ditto for Del Rey (Its 16$ for one volume of Tsubasa in Canada. My gawd x_x;.).

In French, (since I've been bugging one of my favorite publishers for a bit and they heeded 2 out of 3 of my requests), Éditions Pika. They're a brilliant french group and they're great with translations and suchnot and they have a Monthly Magazine incidently called Shonen Collection so either direct volumization or a serial in Shonen Collection. (Plus, they stick religiously to the original covers of each and every one of thier series and don't alter it in any way. I think with Hagaren they'll keep the cover as is and just add thier name in the bottom corner and put "Version Française".)

Kana/Dargaud would be at the bottom though they're very new, they're like how Tokyopop was in its early days. Very bad. the earlier volumes of Yu-Gi-Oh! can bear proof to that >_>;. (They're WAY better than they were before though I just don't think FMA is a good choice for Kana..even if there are over 4 different categories)

Glénat is slowly learning to keep the volumes in original reading format. Though they're the oldest, I don't think Hagaren is a good choice for them. (They've picked up Bleach for a while now...I think if Pika wants to own thier market arses they should pick up Hagaren)

I prefer french versions because they come from Europe and with currency exchange and such, the prices for each manga are much cheaper than the US imports.

*skips off to Éditions Pika's site and suggests Hagaren again*

LIGHTBULB!ED. XD;; I am amused for the evening.
Poison Envywinter_ruins on October 31st, 2004 05:04 pm (UTC)
Yeah. XP I meant in English.

I live in Canada, too. XD I never noticed too much of a high price, but that might be because I started buying manga when it was nearly $30 a book. $15/16 is a great deal by my standards. XD

*shudders* hope its not tokyopop.

first offence: changed the perfectly fine name of power! to "girl got game"

2nd: they (or certan writters/translators) add in cultural references that make no sense in the manga.

3rd: they change stuff around or take other stuff out.

I like darkhorse because they did a really good job with blade of the immortial. considering funi has the anime rights and that viz does all of the manga versions of funi's anime id say it would go to them. i dont really have any problems with viz either
Poison Envy: Against all Odds [by _metamorphic]winter_ruins on October 31st, 2004 05:12 pm (UTC)
They also changed "Ghost" to "Eerie Queerie".

Tokyopop has been getting on my nerves a lot lately. Their Cinimanga annoys the hell out of me, and they did a horrible job with Getbackers. Especially when they called Kazuki a girl (then again, they did reprint that volume. That was good of them).

I do prefer them over Viz though. Viz changes the backgrounds, they've been known to water down their manga, and all in all, I just don't like them much. They don't keep in titles (san, kun) either [then again, Tokyopop only does it half the time...]

The only Darkhorse titles I have are Megatokyo, Hellsing and Trigun, and since they can't do much editing when it comes to Megatokyo, I can't say anything about it. I don't have enough manga by them to judge.

I would like Del Ray to get the manga license, but I got a feeling that it's either going to be Tokyopop or Viz. Viz as most likely. Actually, come to think of it, if Viz gets FMA they may put it in Shonen Jump as a good marketing move. The reason is that all of the manga versions of Funimation licensed anime end up going to these two companies.

YYH = Viz
Sharman King (4kids) = Viz
Fruits Basket = Tokyopop
Dragonball Z = Viz
Detective Conan/Case Closed = Viz

Poison Envywinter_ruins on October 31st, 2004 05:17 pm (UTC)
As strange as it might sound, I don't want Viz to put it in Shonen Jump. Don't ask me why, but lately I've been getting more and more annoyed with Shonen Jump (even though I'm subscribed for like, the next year and three months...)

I'm hoping either Tokyopop or Viz, personally. I didn't really like Del Ray's version of Tsubasa, myself. But I like what Tokyopop's done with Saiyuki and Gravitation and what Viz has done with Bleach, so... (also, they sell pretty cheap--like, 12 bucks a pop in Canada, I don't know where the rest of this lot is getting their manga.)

I just hope it's not like, ADV. *eyes MaLoki scornfully*
Poison Envywinter_ruins on October 31st, 2004 05:19 pm (UTC)
You didn't like Del Rey's Tsubasa? *Gasp* XD

I do like Saiyuki and Gravi. I don't like the 'parental advisory' sticker the threw onto the cover of volume 4 of Saiyuki though.

The only ADV manga I have is volume 1 of Those Who Hunt Elves, so I have no room to judge.

I say Del Rey or Broccoli Books.

With Del Rey, I don't mind paying the extra dollar to keep the honorifics in, get a few color pages, and have detailed translation notes in the back. Del Rey may be new to the market, but they have all the best tricks of the trade down.

Broccoli Books would be good, too. They did "Juvenile Orion" and some other stuff, and I'm super impressed with them. They have charts explaining who uses what names and honorifics, leave the honorifics in, and have a few color pages. Plus, they put in goodies like translations of drama CDs, have offers for free clearfiles, and market Japanese goodies that go with their manga.

Tokyopop would be a third choice because, well, it's a wildcard. They do some stuff well, leaving in honorifics and stuff -- Gravitation, for example -- and then completely eff up other series -- like D.N. Angel. They also have that thing for putting in craptacular pop culture references.
Poison Envywinter_ruins on October 31st, 2004 05:46 pm (UTC)
I haven't actually heard of Broccoli Books, let alone read any. I'll keep my eyes peeled for them, though.

Quebec City? *thinks*

Try a Chapters/Indigo in the BD section that's where they keep them in the Chapters on Ste. Catherine in Montréal so I'd guess it'd be a bit of a similar situation in Quebec City of keeping it with the rest of the BDs. o_o

Randomly, since Del Ray seems liked, maybe if people start bothering them, maybe they'll try and snatch it first? Can't hurt to let them know there's an impatient market.

Since this afternoon, I've decided that I want to send them an e-mail and ask them to pick it up. The problem with that though is that the scannalators might stop if they pick it up too soon...

I don't really know who I'd want to do it. Tokyopop gets rather careless in their editing/translation sometimes (like an entire volume of Petshop of Horrors in which all apostrophes were strange little characters instead). I've been comparing their translation of Gravitation with my copies of the original manga, and there have been a few glaring errors. Mostly, I just hate how shoddy they seem to be in editing--there's always a lot of typos in their mangas.

However, that's the only company I can really say anything on, being that I don't own original manga that has been picked up by anyone else. I can say that I typically don't like how Viz does things either, but I don't have the originals to be able to tell if that's deliberate on the part of the Japanese author or if it's just the translation.
Thief King: Nuriko (flyingcucumber)piratelooksat20 on October 31st, 2004 07:26 pm (UTC)
If VIZ picks it up, I hope to GOD they don't flip it like they did to Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2. Although I don't think they've done that with any of their later releases, so maybe it'll be okay.
sakurak on October 31st, 2004 08:57 pm (UTC)
I think the reason those stayed flipped while others were changed to the original format was because they (the smaller/current size) were made before the whole decision to change it and just kept going with it for consistency's sake. Any Japanese manga they pick up now are left as is.

I say, as long at Shonen Jump doesn't take the job, I'll gladly buy the manga. However, I absolutely hate how SJ tones down a lot of their translations and so, since I'm like always low on cash, I refuse to buy them now, which kills me because Naruto, Bleach, and Kenshin are some of my favorite series.
Sapphiresapphire_hime on November 1st, 2004 02:54 am (UTC)
There is a rumour going around that Viz is working on getting the manga >.> It's just something I heard a while back, but I'm not really sure about it.
Katouka on November 1st, 2004 01:16 pm (UTC)
Personally, I think Viz would be okay. I mean, they tear out the orginal sound affects, which drives me nuts, but as long as they don't tone it down like Naruto or anything, I think I'll be okay.

Tokyo Pop Has so many errors, it's not funny. I hate them so much sometimes. >> But other times, they're okay. *shrug* Really it depends on the manga.

Del Rey Has been pretty good to me so far, I mean, I only own xxxholic and Tsubasa, but they've done REAAAAAAAALLY Good. But it takes them forever to release stuff. x_x

Dark Horse seems okay. o_O

Broccoli is really good, I like them. I think they've done a wonderfull job on Juvinile Orion. *_*
