Playlist, tracklisting thing.
Ok, so basically, I decided to think of songs that "fit" certain characters. And make them into a playlist. Because I like playlists.

It's very much about my taste in music so keep that in mind. ;) I'm not trying to say that this is the definitive list or anything, this is just my opinion.

FMA tracklist

1. Ed: U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

It's not a big secret that I'm a huge U2 fan (Novemeber 23, squee!), but this song fits. It's about searching. It's about faith. It's about not giving up. The music is kind of mellow, but the sheer yearning in Bono's voice matches perfectly.

2. Al: U2 - I Will Follow

Another U2 song, because I thought it would fit nicely into the idea of them being brothers. Loud, fierce music and lyrics that are absolute perfection. They perfectly complement Al's dedication toward staying with his brother and his mother issues. "A boy tries to be a man / His mother takes him by his hand."

3. Roy: Blur - Beetlebum

It was really, really hard trying to come up with a song that I thought fit Roy, and this is the closest I could come up with. Dark, with an edge of forcefulness and sex. The chorus is just glorious as well. I don't think the lyrics quite fit, but the music is so beautiful that I couldn't find a better match.

4. Winry: The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There

Energetic and poppy in that early Beatles way. Full of handclaps harmonies, and the trademark Beatles yowl, it's sexy and young in a way thinks really matches up with Winry's vibrancy. And I'm pretty sure that Winry's seventeen by the end of the series. ;)

5. Scar: The Clash - I Fought the Law

The Clash were a punk band, back in the day when it was actually considered rebellious to be in a punk band. Loud and vicious and angry. You can just see Scar going out to deconstruct some heads to this music. "I fought the law / And the law won."

6.Hughes: Moby - Rafters

Hughes is hands down my favorite character in FMA. Moby's music is all about soul, and this song is no different. There aren't really any lyrics, but the gospel humming and funky dance groove characterize Hughes' natural effervescence quite nicely. The song practically glows.

7.Armstrong: Daft Punk - One More Time

If "Rafters" glows, then this one sparkles. It's all celebratory lyrics over Neo-disco. "Celebrate being so free / One more time." Even with all that, you get the sense of a good beat and a bit of retro style. Hooray for French guys that dress up like robots!

8.Izumi: Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice

Best known for being the video that Christopher Walken danced in, "Weapon of Choice" has a dance groove and attitude to spare. Izumi is definitely one of my favorite characters, and she's as strong, tough and asskicking as this song is.

9.Hawkeye: Oasis - Supersonic

Hawkeye is teh sex. She really is. "Supersonic" is sexy in a casual, almost background way. It's loud, it's forceful, and it could kick your ass if you're not paying attention. It's just one of those songs. Get in its way, and you get run over. Not in a punkish way, though. In a "calmly puts three bullets in you an walks over your decaying corpse" sort of way.

10. Havoc: The Strokes - I Can't Win

Poor Havoc. He really does get shafted all the time. In both the manga and the anime. "I Can't Win" is all about rejection, something Havoc has plenty of experience with. The Strokes manage to pull off sounding vibrant and melancholy at the same time.

But where is character X (where X is a character not on the above list)? you ask. Well, ten songs is more than enough, so I stuck to my favorite characters. I matched up a ton more than just these.

Some other characters:
Radiohead - Optimistic: Bradley
The Pixies - Where is My Mind?: Wrath
NERD - Tape You: Lust
Stereophonics - Jealousy: Envy
Radiohead - Dollars and Cents: Greed
U2 - Mofo: Sloth
The Vines - Outtathaway: Gluttony
The Stills - Gender Bombs: Tucker
Coldplay - The Scientist: Hohenheim

Oh, and PLEASE DON'T HOTLINK AS IT MAKES ME CRY.

Current Music: The Killers - Mr Brightside

Songs I have on my FMA playlist that I think fit the series well:

October Project: Bury My Lovely, After the Fall - Both of these songs perhaps don't necessarily fit the series music-wise, but the lyrics are perfect. Bury My Lovely is all about being haunted by figures from the past and refusing to believe in things. After the Fall is all about regretting the loss of innocence due to a past mistake. I very much like these songs in regards to FMA, and will turn them on when roleplaying or ficcing for a good angsty mood.

Placebo: Protege Moi - The association of this one comes mostly from the AWESOME music video "Tsumibito no Kashou," though I really think the song itself fits the series. The melody and lyrics are both dark, and the lyrics convey a bit of the message I think FMA was trying to get across. At least about sin, anyway XD

Nightwish: Two for Tragedy - The association of this one also comes from another excellent music video. The music of this one has an epic feel to it, and the lyrics fit pretty well too. It's all about never returning from death and how sad it is for those left behind.

Switchfoot: Meant to Live - Lyrics fit the show well, I think. I associate it with people selfishly using alchemy and how much damage that does, and then there are parts about war and stuff that just fit the series. I dunno, I think it's a good song XD

Tears for Fears: Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Lyrics are perfect, really. Especially parts about "turn your back on mother nature," etc. It's a song about wanting to take everything for yourself, sort of.

Heh, I had trouble explaining why I associate things. Sorry. XD Try listening to them yourself and see what you think!

Ani DiFranco fits Hawkeye so well, IMO. I've been writing the Hawkeye 12 themes when I have time and mainly listen to her in the meantime. "Independence Day" especially fits with ep51/ch39.

Roy? "Smoke" by Ben Folds Five and "Hadaka no Oujisama" by Love Psychedelico. Roy and Ed? "The Warmth" by Incubus. The military kids in general? "Get In Line" by Barenaked Ladies and "Things that Disappear" by Rhett Miller. Ed? "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces" by Ben Folds Five (if you have not listened to this song, YOU NEED TO). Barenaked Ladies' "Great Provider" for Hoenheim & Al & Ed.

Um, yeah, certain songs inspire fics in me a lot if you haven't figured it out. ^^;;

My Hughes song has always been "Perfect Day" -- y'know, the opener to Legally Blond.

You can shoot me now.

I've never seen Legally Blond. Is that Lou Reed?

Haha. Yup, yup.

*shrug* These are just how view the characters. And I find that most songs about mothers are usually really, really cheesy.

I like "Welcome to last year" by fairweather for Rose, "Song about an Angel" by sunny day real estate for Al, "Mistakes we knew we were making" by straylight run for Ed, and "Get it faster" jimmy eat world for Envy.

For some reason, after watching episode 50, I connected FMA with Peter Gabriel's "Solisbury Hill." I suppose it was only because i was thinking of how the show would end while listening to the song...but somehow I think the bittersweet tone fits....

*Thinks of Hughes dancing like Chris Walken* That's such a great image! *loves Hughes*

:O I Fought the Law for Scar...? Maybe for... Havoc... It's making me jump around and dance

WHOOOOOOOOOO DANCE
thedeadparrot: heedless onethedeadparrot on October 25th, 2004 04:26 pm (UTC)
Well, you can dance to it, but it's not really inteded to be dancable. It's mostly supposed to be "down with the establishment!" and all that jazz.

But hey, if you don't think it fits, that's your perogative. :p

I saw Innocence Lost the other day, and I must say, bravo.

Also...how a song like that could exist and not have been WRITTEN for the very purpose disturbs me.

Blood in the Boardroom by Ani Difranco perversely reminds me of Izumi ("It ain't no hassle no, it ain't no mess/Right now it's the only power that I possess/Businessmen got the money, got the instruments of death/I can make life you know, I can make breath"), but I have no idea why.

as for the other characters, whenever I'm into a fandom, I can find a way to relate most songs to some character >.>

\:D/!! You are my new favourite person because your FMA FST includes U2, Oasis, The Clash, The Strokes, and BLUR (favourite. band. everrrr.)

Also, "Outtathaway!" as Gluttony's theme? That is so PERFECT. That and the fact that it's my favourite song and I love whenever it recieves a mention.

I always found a song that I could relate pretty well to a few members of the FMA cast (namely Al and Roy) has been "Sparkle and Shine" by Econoline Crush. But my Edward song has always been "Angels of the Silences" by Counting Crows, among many others, but those are the top two that come to mind right now.
