A sampling of the dialogue changes to come!
Yay! We have honest examples of the soon to be airing dub!
Don't get the wrong impression, I don't hate it or want to make fun of it, (I think it's not bad) but since the Adult Swim video came out I just figured they'd be changing some of the lines. ("Behold the power of science~!" ...Though I thought the re-written dialogue between Al and Ed about the dead coming back to life was the most 'bleh~')

So, for those who are interested, I did my best to copy them as I heard them from the clips (I'm not sure about Cray's first line, eh) then tacked on the original japanese in romanji -and- for comparison purposes, the translated lines as from Anime-keep's sub of it, because their lines are pretty much on the dot, at least in these scenes.

In one or two instances I put my additional translation [in brackets] either to go for a complete literal translation or to clarify an element.

So, on to the

--key--
bold = dub lines
italics = japanese romanji
neither = ani-keep's translation
line changed [major] [minor]
additional line/words
different/unusual word choice
missing line/words
[alternate translation - for clarity or specifity]

**Clip 2**

Don't worry young one.  Your brother will join you soon.
Shimpai nai. Oniisan mo sugi ni ikimasu yo.
Do not worry. Your older brother will join you soon.

Ah! Cray! What are you doing?
C[l/r]ay-shikei, nani wo...!
Accountant Clay, what are you doing?

These two are enemies of God. This is His will, Rose, not mine!
Koyatsura ha kami no teki! Subete ha kami no go-ishi desu!
These people are enemies of God! This is God's will!

I don't think so, mister.
Aa, bikkurishita!
That suprised me.

I got it, I got it!
Aa! Boku no atama!
My head!

Strike!

Aaah! He doesn't have a head!
Dounateru no! Kubi kugi...!
What's going on? His head...

Yeah, that's Al.
Dou mou kou mo...
There isn't much to explain.

Please don't be scared Rose. This is how I am.
Kouiu koto de.
This is how it is.

Y-you're not there.
Nakami ga nai..
There's nothing inside...

It's true, I don't have a body, but I'm here. This is my punishment for setting foot on holy ground where mortals are forbidden. We made a mistake Rose, and we're paying for it.
Kore ga, hitotoshite okashite ha narai seikin ni fumikonde, batsu, to iu yatsu sa.  Boku mo, niisan mo ne.
This is punishment for venturing into an area humans are prohibited from entering.  My brother and I were punished. [Me, and my brother too...]

[scream]
iyaa!
No!

Rose, wait!
Roze!
Rose!

**Clip 1**

Don't let them worry you, Rose. You forget that the great Sun God Leto [liito as opposed to leto] has blessed me with the Philosopher's Stone. Besides I have far more experience than these heretic boys did.
Anzuru koto ha nai. Watashi ni ha Leto-shin yori sazukatta kono kenja no ishi ga aru.  Sore ni karera no you na mijuku mono demo nai.
Do not worry. I have the Philosopher's Stone that Leto gave me. And I'm not an amateur like them. [I am not weaklings like they are.]

Don't be stupid. No matter what kind of powers you have some things can't be done.
fuzakkena! donnani daishou haratemo dekinai koto ha aru!
Don't kid us! There are things that cannot be done no matter how much you try. [...no matter what your payment.]

Oh, then why are you so anxious to get the stone? You want to beat the laws of  equivalence just as I do, and bring your mommy back!
De ha naze kenja no ishi wo housuru? kore ga areba haha no rensei ga naruto omoteiru no darou!
Then why do you seek the Philosopher's Stone? You must think that you will be able to transmute your mother if you use this. [You must think your transmutation of your mother will work...]

Wrong, holy man!
kanchigai sunna hage!
Stop assuming things, baldy.

All we want is to get our bodies normal again. See, we don't lie about what's possible. We didn't start a cult!
oretachi ha motto no karada ni modoritai dake da. mottomo, modorerukamo, dakedo na.
We just want our regular bodies back. Although there is a chance that it might not work. [That is, if it's possible to go back.]

We will ask one more time, please give us the stone.
mou ichido dake iimasu. kenja no ishi wo watashite kudasai.
We'll say this one more time. Please, give us the Philosopher's Stone.

You are damned State Alchemist. May the wrath of God fall upon your head.
kokka renkinjutsushi, kisamara ni kami no ikari ga kudaru.
National[State] Alchemist, God's wrath will fall upon you.

Stop hiding behind that crap! Get down here and I'll show you some wrath!
Orite koi dosanri! Kaku no chigai wo misete yaru!
Get down here, you third-rate magician! [You third-rater!] I'll show you how inferior you are to us!

Sinners!
Baka-me!
Fool!

**The End**

So, some changes were minor, some were not changed at all, and others were not so...
My opinion is that the lines that suffered the most were the deletions, specifically "We just want our regular bodies back. Although there is a chance that it might not work..." and "This is punishment for venturing into an area humans are prohibited from entering.  My brother and I were punished."
But then, that's because it makes Ed's arm-clutching moment seem kinda meaningless now (as someone mentioned before) and also loses that sad moment of Al's speech were the camera focuses on Ed.

Hopefully some people found this interesting/entertaining/sad. It took far too much time ^_^;;
But if people are interested I might do something similar when the first episode airs?

Wow, neat. Good effort! One or two more changes I didn't notice, so yeah, good stuff. ^^
リミックス・サクラremix_sakura on October 20th, 2004 03:21 pm (UTC)
thanks for this! I think it was interesting to see just what they've changed to far. I hate when anything is changed/added/deleted unnecessarily just to make things sound cool, but it doesn't seem like it's as bad as it could have been. =\ and in some instances literal translation isn't best.

though "Get down here and I'll show you some wrath!" kinda amuses me. hehe, Wrath.

XD That's what I thought too. (Hey, Moofy doesn't show up until episode 28!)
Mikefinnell1912 on October 20th, 2004 03:27 pm (UTC)
That's all I thought too.

"But wait...the part of you that's Wrath isn't here yet."
Shinhoshishinhoshi on October 20th, 2004 06:42 pm (UTC)
I'm glad people are liking it.

I'm also against the deleting of lines just for 'whatever' and that's why I'm sort of hyped about this pet project. We'll see what happens when episode 1 airs.

I giggled at the 'show you some wrath!' myself. It was actually kind of hard to note the changes without being biased, because some were better/funnier than others.

Well the speech edits are done for reasons like lip sync/flap of the animated character. Like, you can't go "Hi how are you? My name is Bob" when the character's mouth flaps just enough that you can say "Name's Bob. You?"

Al's speech changes will probably be minor-er because the voice directors have to worry about time constraints.

I never got the giggles from the 'I'll show you some wrath' line. Maybe its just me o_o;

*clap clap clap* Great job! ^_^

and also loses that sad moment of Al's speech were the camera focuses on Ed.

Yeah, I liked that part. :(

I'm sadly anticipating more of my favorite moments being cut. ;_;

...But actually, I was kind of inspired to put this together/post it because of your episode translations. Eheh. ^^;
Cynthia: by arex_kuncsakuras on October 20th, 2004 06:57 pm (UTC)
YAY! I've done some good in the world! :D
reversing the polarity of the neutron flowshinraisei on October 20th, 2004 09:06 pm (UTC)
I think though, those are time cuts. In other words, CN has to accomadate more commercials than the original (usually in the US its 3-4 breaks. 2-3 in Canada but it varies) so in order to accomadate this they have to cut perhaps a few seconds of footage.

The DVD however WILL have the full episode imo. =)
Cynthia: Edwardcsakuras on October 20th, 2004 09:09 pm (UTC)
Well, from what I remember, they didn't do any unnecessary cuts for Detective Conan/Case Closed.
billypilgrim on October 20th, 2004 03:23 pm (UTC)
Yes, some lines are different, and you have to consider mouth flaps, and in Al's case, screen time. Sometimes things take longer to say in one language, and so they had to cut out lines.
Adaadalove on October 20th, 2004 03:56 pm (UTC)
Though, some of the lines for Al were changed, even when he'd probably have enough screentime to say them.

The second line cracked me up. Maybe I just like it a little different.

I wonder if that was on purpose... you know, whether English!Al is going to have a bit more attitude.

Well, his VA is 12 after all so you never know...o_o; (What worries me, but is laying at the back of my head for the time being, is that when Dimsuke turns 13 he might not have a kid voice anymore but I think that when he turns 13 it'll be during the recording of the episode where Al goes maturerer-mode on Ed so ep 40-ish)

>>Don't worry young one. Your brother will join you soon.

Ahh, so that's what he said; it was so muffled that I thought he said "Albert" and I was all "wtf? Cray's stupid."
Cynthiacsakuras on October 20th, 2004 05:11 pm (UTC)
I thought he said "Elric" at first. O.o
Shinhoshishinhoshi on October 20th, 2004 06:44 pm (UTC)
First time I heard it, I thought he said 'Al' but if that was the case then they've really changed things!

That was really my best guess rather than what he most assuredly said. But it seemed in theme with the whole 'priest' setup they have going on. I blame the bizarre sound quality on the clips.
mikkeneko on October 20th, 2004 05:21 pm (UTC)
One thing I might say about the Baldy vs. Holy Man thing -- as near as I can tell, 'baldy' is in Japanese a derogatory way to refer to a monk or any holy man, so the replacement isn't completely out there...
angsty lemon ukewabisuke on October 20th, 2004 05:43 pm (UTC)
I think of the dub's "holy man" as sarcastic. It'd be a rather out-of-place insult for "baldy" anyways unless there's something wrong with being bald in the European/American culture.
Shinhoshishinhoshi on October 20th, 2004 06:50 pm (UTC)
Actually, I totally wasn't thinking about that and thought it was a 'huh?' change myself, but that's a good point. Makes sense.

It doesn't strike me as quite as insulting, even sarcastically, but maybe I'm just used to the stereotypical anime reaction of 'Hage?!'

But that's good. One dub mystery solved! maybe...? ^^

Where is everyone finding these?
Shinhoshishinhoshi on October 20th, 2004 06:57 pm (UTC)
Here they have the clips in streaming media format on the official page, some computers/internet speeds may have a hard time viewing them... http://www.fullmetalalchemist.com/dvd.htm

...So here is a post where someone has put up download links for them!
