Another reason!
Another reason why Hiromu Arakawa. Is. GOD.

In Global History, we've been going over Ancient China, and I was looking through my textbook, taking notes on Tao(Dao)ism. I found this excerpt a little too wierd.

"...Instead of accepting nature as it was, Daoist priests searched for a substance to bring immortality and experimented with alchemy trying to transfrom originary metal into gold. To achieve this goal, alchemists mixed chemistry and magic. Sometimes, their experiments led to advances to science. Efforts to find the key to eternal life may have contributed to discoveries in medicine..."

Ling, and the crew from Xing, anyone? There's more about the Daoist's creating gunpowder, but as of now, that's not relevant to Ling, and the crew but come on. Cool info that once again Arakawa didn't make up.

Oh yeah, alchemy was a big thing in some branches of Daoism... I took a course in Religion and Chinese Social History last year, and I remember talking about that in one class... too bad I don't have the textbooks any more, otherwise I'd go back and read up on those parts.

I think the biggest link is Ling looking for eternal life, while that's what the Daoists were looking for.

And hence why we should worship the greatness that is her work and her skills as a writer and artist =D.

That's interesting because I went over chapters 36-40 (wherever Ling and co. discuss the matter of immortality) the whole 'mix of Alchemy and Magic' that Fu was talking about perked my attention because I somehow remembered hearing about that or reading it from somewhere. Ò_o; (Photgraphic memory...fear it.)

Efforts to find the key to eternal life may have contributed to discoveries in medicine..."

Hmm. Fu mentioned something about pharmacies in chapter 40 and how it was the result of alchemy mixed with magic or something to the jist.

Very interesting that you brought it to attention...
*thwacks the distraction that is her internet*
Whee~~ homework needs to be done. tra-la-la-la-la~ XD

Yeah, the Ling group (God they need a nickname;) are bassically Daoists in every way, medicine, search for eternal life, and using magic along with alchemy. It'd be intresting to see if someone breaks out a gun of some sort, since, apparently, Dao's created gunfire..

yeah, i was hoping that they would but they seem to be going the "totally ninja" route instead (though the grenade-bomb thing could be linked? I'm not sure). Gunpowder, was actually created when people were trying to make an elixer of life when it exploded in their faces. So they decided to use it as a form of weaponry.

The whole link with immortality and medicine really made me smile, especially with the Chinese connection in mind; I did far too much research on China in 6th grade. And I'm Chinese so that counts for double or something. XD

Well, the gunpowder may be slightly connected. Didn't Lan Fan set off a firework or something like that to send a signal to Ling?

That's right, actually. Because if you read things like "Houshin Engi" and other legends having to do with Daoism (Taoism), they often talk about the sort of alchemy that the crew from Xing talks about--"Lian Dan Shu." It means that they're trying to transmute a thing called "Xian Dan" (godly pill, by rough translations) that can either heal all wounds, cure all diseases--and give eternal life.

reminds me...does anyone know where I can find pics of Long and crew? I can't seem to find any...^_^ it's cool though...although i thought gun powder was originally made for fireworks...not guns, that the Europeans found it useful for guns and stuff
