Idle Thoughts
Since this has stuff to do with episode 51, I'm going to cut it.

I was just thinking about how Ed is trapped in our world, and apparently is traveling. In order to get the most out of his travels, I fully expect Ed to pick up knew languages. Languages that have no equivlant to his native world.

So, when he gets back(yes, I said when, not if) I see amusing things happening. I can see him cursing in a language nobody else understands, and then, upon discovering that nobody understands him, use it to insult all sorts of people. Well, mostly Roy.

Maybe even teaching some language or another to Al, so they have their own private code.

Anybody else think this is possible, or am I the only one?

I am strange, sometimes.

This whole ramble was inspired by a fic.

I drew the conclusion from ep 50 that Amestris speaks English.

How? Hohenheim addressed the English boy he expected to NOT be housing his son's soul in the language the boy would understand - English - and Edward understood it.

I expect he's already picked up some emergency German now that he's living in Munich, and will probably be fluent in it, and the languages of the surrounding countries, by the time of the movie. Hohenheim appears to speak fluent German, which is to be expected, given that he may have lived in Germany for several years before Ed showed up.

To conclude - I agree with you.

Just to be contrary, I could counter-propose that Ed was demonstratably sharing the body and mind with the English boy still living there; he could have been filtering Hohenheim's words through that boy's speech centers.

...I'd like to see a fic (or official) rendition of Ed's first few days in our world (the second time.)

Ed wasn't filtering his understanding of anything else through the London!Edward's brain, so I don't know of any reason to assume he was filtering language through it.

I maintain that the common tongue in Amestris is English.

I assume that the language used in Amestris was similar with English since Ed didn't seem to have any linguistic problem when he first came.

Since he then lived in Munich, logically he should speak some German. And then probably he'd pick up Romanian during his journey to Transilvania.

Hmm... interesting.

Ooo! Fic idea coming up:

Ed comes back and in one scene, cusses the Colonel Fuhrer out and Al, the only person who understands, is laughing his head off/blushing like crazy.

:reads last line: Which fic? O__O

This one, by csakuras, found here.

The part about Ed understanding French is what triggerd this.

I figured that English was close enough to what they spoke that it was easy to figure out. But then I got to thinking about who was stuck there. Ed and Hohenheim are both genis-level. I don't think that, if they put their minds to it, it would take too long for them to learn new languages.
Cynthiacsakuras on October 11th, 2004 08:21 pm (UTC)
Yay, I inspire rambling! XD
Icedark_elficedark_elf on October 11th, 2004 08:24 pm (UTC)
And we all know rambling inspires bunnies. Good job! *laughs*
maboroshi_hime on October 12th, 2004 04:37 pm (UTC)
:squeals: Thanks! That's wonderful.

Let's think... Hohenheim already learned the language and if Ed takes after his father, which he does, he'd probably learn it too. Besides, he's in an enviroment where he has to know it. It'd be easier to learn that way. Like sticking a foreign exchange student in a school.

Maybe Hohenheim and Ed turned into Babel-fish when they saw True Knowledge?

Yeah, I think Amestris speaks English -- hence all the English names -- and Hohenheim and Ed just picked up German because they're both geniuses.
Cynthia: Edwardcsakuras on October 11th, 2004 08:16 pm (UTC)
In my fanfic, he learned French. >D

"Je ne petit pas!!!" (I think that's right.)
Icedark_elficedark_elf on October 11th, 2004 08:21 pm (UTC)
*laughs* That's the fic I'm refering to. Just posted a link to it. *grins wildly* Thank you for putting new bunnies in my head.
Mad Maudlinginzai on October 11th, 2004 08:33 pm (UTC)
"Je ne suis pas petit," I think, but in Ed's case, it's hardly a true statement regardless... XD

"Voici est un garçon blond. Il est plus petit qu'un legume..."
"QUI EST PLUS PETIT QU'UN LEGUME?!?!?! JE TOI TUE MAINTENENT!!"

*je suis morte*

You know, French lessons would have been a lot more exciting if we'd done things like this instead of the usual vocab.

...and is it wrong to be so utterly amused that I now know enough Latin to recognize the Latin 'ici' in the French 'voici' and to have pondered the language shift? [end geek]
Cynthia: Edwardcsakuras on October 11th, 2004 08:37 pm (UTC)
LOL!

Forgive me. I am only in French 3 and don't pay nearly enough attention. XD
mikkeneko on October 11th, 2004 08:43 pm (UTC)
I don't think you'd say "small like a bean" in French anyway. It's a Japanese idiom. :) In English you'd say he was small like a shrimp...

Ed: JE VAIS TE TUER!

...right.
Absolutely no decorum.niwakaame on October 11th, 2004 11:18 pm (UTC)
True you can't really say it, but you can say 'small as a shrimp'.
Hime D. ~創世の錬金術師~hime1999 on October 11th, 2004 09:25 pm (UTC)
さっぱり分からない・・・

You know, I badly want to hear Paku Romi VOing Ed in English. Scratch that, I want to see FMA in English (not Engrish!) (and of course, German for some conversation in ep.51) with all of the original cast!
Absolutely no decorum.niwakaame on October 11th, 2004 11:16 pm (UTC)
You mind if I correct the french a bit ^^;?
[wtf is Niwaka doing here being nerdy? <.<]

'Voici un garçon blond.[Here is a blond boy].'
'Je te tue toi maintenant!!'

...I live in France but I'lls till say: French = masochism xD yay.
Eek. Latin. Don't even mention this forbidden word. Shame on you.

XD! If Ed and Al have their own "code", it'll be like twin-speak!

Icedark_elficedark_elf on October 11th, 2004 08:27 pm (UTC)
*laughs* They would turn it into an alchemy code.

It's fun to imagine Roy saying something, Ed making his smartass comment in a unknown language, and Al in the corner, shaking with laughter at what his brother said.

Dear Gods! Can you imagine them talking at full speed about some theory, in public, with something like German.

Of course, I can see Roy demanding that Ed teach them some language or another(French maybe) to his people, so they have their own form of secure communication.
mikkeneko on October 11th, 2004 08:33 pm (UTC)
...And he'd teach them all terribly vulgar words and swear up and down they're official code. XD
Icedark_elficedark_elf on October 11th, 2004 08:57 pm (UTC)
He would, too. And just stand there, amused as they cursed in a language.

I think Hawkeye would figure it out really, really fast, though.
Saya Aensland: BWAHAHA!saya_aensland on October 11th, 2004 08:19 pm (UTC)
Seeing as all written documents in Amestris are written in either English or Engrish...
mikkeneko on October 11th, 2004 08:30 pm (UTC)
They're written in English, but it seems obvious that the people who are writing them don't speak English... ^_~
Saya Aensland: BWAHAHA!saya_aensland on October 11th, 2004 08:34 pm (UTC)
Then the official language of Amestris is Engrish. English isn't that big of a leap once you're already fluent in Engrish.
mikkeneko on October 11th, 2004 08:36 pm (UTC)
Now I want to take over a small Latin American country just so I can make the official state language Engrish.
Buffalo in a China Shoprinnychan on October 11th, 2004 08:25 pm (UTC)
Ok...what is Amestris? When did Hoenheim address Ed in English? There's so much stuff in this series that I miss some of it.
mikkeneko on October 11th, 2004 08:28 pm (UTC)
"Amestris" is the name of the country/world of FMA. It's only ever referred to that way in the manga, never in the anime: however, on the soundtrack, there's a piece called "Amestris" so I think it's safe to assume that the name remains the same.

We assume that Hohenheim addressed Ed in English in episode 50 because he was in London at the time, and he thought he was addressing a normal London boy.
